What is DSX


DSXJHMI, the project

DSX is software for postprocessing of Magnetic Resonance spectroscopic and imaging data.

It is based on Dr. Peter B. Barker's CSX and IMAX programs, which he and collaborators developed between 1988 and 2005 on the Sun Solaris operating system. These programs were written in ANSI C and made use of the openlook graphical user interface (GUI) library that was an integral part of the x windows system. During the early days, Openlook, developed by Sun Microsystems and AT&T found itself in competition with MOTIF, a GUI toolkit that was developed in collective effort. MOTIF prevailed and became the basis for the Common Desktop Environment (CDE) and in form of OpenMOTIF of the KDE (the LINUX version of the CDE). The development of OpenLook was stopped and other GUI toolkits gained popularity. With the advent of LINUX and free software, many new GUI implementations became availabe, e.g. Gnome, KDE, QT, etc. Despite the dependence on OpenLook, the CSX and IMAX software comprised many desirable features. For example they allowed for the interactive analysis of MR spectroscopic data from the most different sources. Due to a large number of requests for the software and the cost connected with purchasing a SUN workstation with a generic UNIX operating system that enables one to compile OpenLook based applications, it became clear that to provide easy access for users to the general ideas contained in CSX and IMAX the software would have to be implemented for the most common personal computer systems that exist in the world today - LINUX and Windows.

DSXJHMI, V1.0

In early 2004, we started to investigate which GUI implementation would meet the requirements best. The GUI implementation should be free software, available for a large number of computer systems, especially different LINUX flavors and Windows and similar enough to Openlook to port the spectroscopic code with as few changes as possible. The result became DSXJHMI V1.0, which combines CSX and IMAX in one program, written in C++ and compileable from the same source code on LINUX and Windows systems. Due to advances in the processor performance of modern personal computers, the image display and analysis part (previously IMAX) was completely rewritten to take advantage of the graphics performance of these systems.

DSXJHMI, V2.0 (currently experimental)

In early 2005 we made the decision to rewrite the spectroscopy interface of DSXJHMI, such as it is state of the art in modern computer program development to rewrite the prototype after a test series. This is the only way to eliminate major design problems and to clean the code from unnecessary or disadvantageous design concepts. DSXJHMI V2.0 (experimental) is a completely different program: The spectroscopy analysis is now implemented in a object oriented c++ based class with elements of generic programming. The extensibility and modularity reaches new dimensions with this design and we are sure it will be of great advantage. However, it is a huge effort and therefore the latest stable release will remain DSXJHMI V1.0 for a while.

DSXJHMI, V2.1 (advanced prototype)
